COVID-19 and the Double Burden on Women in Jordan

As families were forced to stay at home during the lockdown, the Information and Research Center – King Hussein Foundation, in partnership with Hivos with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands under the WE4L project, were keen to learn how and if gender dynamics were altered. Through an online survey with men and women in Jordan, we aimed to explore the ways in which unpaid work was distributed among respondents and their families and for employed respondents, how that was balanced with paid work.
The research argued that most women who engage in paid work often end up with the ‘double burden’ of having to attend to household responsibilities in addition to working in the labor market.
